For use in therapy and when recovering from injury. Each exercise band comes in an individual bag.
It should therefore be protected from extreme temperatures, chemicals, perfumes, sweat and moisture, all of which may speed up deterioration. Storing these products properly will help prolong the life of the product. Resistance bands should be laid flat and dusted with talcum powder from time to time. This prevents the rubber from sticking together when warm and will aid the process of tying and untying the bands.

Not sure how to get started with your new resistance band? Here are a few core Pilates resistance band exercises to try:
1. Glute bridges with resistance band
Place a stretch band above your knees and lie on an exercise mat for support and comfort. Engage your core and press through your heels to lift your hips, activating your glutes and outer thighs. This is ideal for lower-body strength and postural alignment.
2. Seated arm pulses
Using a Pilates resistance band looped around your wrists, sit tall on a sitting box. Keep elbows bent at 90 degrees and pulse outward for 30 seconds. This builds shoulder stability and strengthens the upper back — essential for improving posture.
3. Standing lateral walks
Step into your exercise band and gently sidestep across the room to fire up the glutes and outer hips. Great as a warm-up or functional conditioning exercise.
4. Assisted teaser prep
Attach your resistance band to a stable anchor (like a home reformer footbar) and use it to support spinal articulation as you roll up. This is perfect for building core control and flexibility without strain.
5. Pilates jump prep with bands
Combine jump board moves with a resistance band to activate the legs and build explosive power. Add control by resisting on the return phase.

What are resistance bands used for in exercise?
Resistance bands are versatile tools used to build strength, improve mobility and enhance stability. In Pilates, they're particularly effective for adding resistance to bodyweight movements, supporting alignment and refining control. Whether you're targeting core engagement, upper-body toning or lower-body activation, resistance band exercises can be tailored to suit all fitness levels.
Can beginners use resistance bands?
Absolutely. Resistance bands are ideal for beginners because they offer a low-impact, joint-friendly way to build strength and body awareness. A Pilates resistance band allows new users to learn foundational movements with added support and resistance, without the need for heavy equipment. Start with a lighter band to master control before progressing to stronger resistance levels.
What types of resistance bands are available?
At PRA, our bands are flat stretch bands with light, medium and heavy resistance, perfect for Pilates-based routines and adaptable for a variety of exercises.
How do I choose the right resistance band for my fitness level?
Choose your resistance band based on both your current strength and your training goals:
- Light — Ideal for beginners, rehab or mobility work.
- Medium — Suitable for moderate resistance during full-body workouts.
- Heavy — Best for experienced users looking to increase intensity.
Start with a lighter band for new movements or high-repetition sets, and gradually increase resistance as strength improves.
Can resistance bands replace weights?
For many exercises, yes. While resistance bands and free weights offer different forms of resistance, bands can effectively build strength, especially in functional or Pilates-based routines. They create variable resistance, meaning the tension increases as the band stretches, engaging stabiliser muscles that aren’t always activated with weights.
Though they may not fully replace heavy lifting for advanced strength goals, they’re an excellent alternative or complement for everyday fitness, especially for low-impact training or those wanting to exercise on the go.
Do resistance bands help with flexibility and mobility?
Yes! Stretch bands are commonly used in dynamic warm-ups, rehab and cooldowns to improve joint mobility and muscle flexibility. In Pilates resistance band exercises, they assist with deeper stretching, spinal articulation and muscle lengthening, making them a valuable tool for enhancing range of motion safely and effectively.
How often should I train with resistance bands?
You can incorporate resistance band exercises into your Pilates or general workout routine 2–4 times per week, depending on your goals. Because bands are low-impact and joint-friendly, they’re suitable for frequent use, including recovery days or active rest sessions. Just be sure to listen to your body and allow rest between high-intensity sessions.
What are common mistakes to avoid when using resistance bands?
Here are a few things to watch out for when training with exercise bands:
- Poor form — Always maintain alignment, especially in Pilates, to avoid compensating with the wrong muscles.
- Incorrect band resistance — Using a band that’s too heavy or too light can reduce effectiveness or increase injury risk.
- Sudden releases — Always control the return phase of a movement to avoid band snapback.
- Improper band care — Store your resistance bands flat and dusted with powder to prevent sticking or tearing over time.
